About Pixel Calculator
The Pixel Calculator is a versatile tool that helps photographers, designers, and digital artists understand the relationship between pixel dimensions, physical size, and resolution (DPI/PPI).
How It Works
When you enter values for width, height, and DPI (dots per inch), the calculator:
- Calculates the physical dimensions (width and height in inches) by dividing the pixel dimensions by the DPI
- Determines the aspect ratio by finding the greatest common divisor of the width and height
- Calculates the total number of pixels and converts it to megapixels (1 megapixel = 1 million pixels)
- Displays the PPI (pixels per inch), which is the same as DPI in this context
Common Use Cases
- Print Preparation: Determine how large an image can be printed at a given resolution
- Screen Design: Understand how images will display on screens with different pixel densities
- Photography: Calculate the effective resolution of cropped images
- Web Design: Maintain consistent aspect ratios across different display sizes
Technical Notes
The calculator uses standard mathematical formulas for these calculations:
physicalWidth = widthPixels / dpi
physicalHeight = heightPixels / dpi
aspectRatio = simplifyRatio(widthPixels, heightPixels)
totalPixels = widthPixels * heightPixels
megapixels = totalPixels / 1,000,000
The aspect ratio is simplified by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 1920×1080 becomes 16:9 (divided by 120).
